About Us

Dr. J.H. Shade
Dr. Shade became an Acupuncturist because of a lifelong search to understand how the disparate parts of a human being are connected. After many years and thousands of miles of travel, Dr. Shade settled in Portland. In seeking to become an Acupuncturist and an Herbalist, he graduated from NUNM in 2015 with a Masters of Science in Oriental Medicine, and from the Won Institute in 2025 with a Doctorate in Acupuncture. Prior to enrolling at NUNM, he completed his undergraduate degree in classical Chinese literature from Portland State University, gaining firsthand knowledge of the basic tenets of Chinese Medicine. He has found that a clear understanding of these works can provide a holistic map of the relationships between the different organs of the body and the mind, allowing emotional and mental suffering as well as chronic disease to be treated as efficiently and effectively as physical injuries or common illnesses.
He believes that disease and suffering may only be diagnosed by looking at a person in the context of the life and the world that person occupies, and therefore every person must be treated as a unique individual with their own specific set of circumstances. Each treatment is founded on the idea of bringing that person back into balance with themselves, not some idealized normal. In addition to nutritional and herbal consultations, he incorporates a spectrum of techniques, both ancient and modern, in order to address the multiple layers of the emotional and physical person during treatment.Dr. Shade believes the experience of feeling whole and healthy is the pinnacle of the human experience, and being able to support others in their quest is his passion.

Cassidy Rice
Cassidy was born and raised in Oregon and is a member of the Cow Creek Umpqua Tribe. She and Shade often travel to Southern Oregon to participate in Tribal cultural events, and Cassidy serves on both her Tribe’s Cannabis Commission and Health Advisory Committee. She is a graduate of Reed College and Stanford Law School. Cassidy was an attorney in the Portland area for many years before enrolling in the National University of Natural Medicine, where she is currently in a doctoral program studying acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas.

Cassidy has been training in Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy since 2024 and continues to study the modality through intensive annual trainings with Todd Jackson’s school in Portland. As a student of meditation and yoga for many years, Cassidy was drawn to craniosacral therapy’s essential values of deep listening and cultivating subtle awareness. She has personally experienced more nervous system regulation and greater overall calm from receiving regular treatments herself and loves to share craniosacral therapy’s profound restorative ability with patients.

Cassidy brings her diverse variety of life experiences to the treatment room. She understands firsthand the toll that chronic stress and tension can take on the body and mind and is especially interested in supporting patients navigating stress-related conditions and life transitions.

Services

Acupuncture
Dr. Shade has experience successfully treating a wide variety of issues with acupuncture. While he specializes in treating PTSD, the remediation of pain, lessening the effects of stress on bodies and minds, and improving digestive issues, he has also spent years working and treating injuries with sports medicine specialists and chiropractors. Acupuncture is proven to be a safe and effective treatment for the improvement in quality of life for people who suffer from many different maladies.

Bodywork
Cassidy offers Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy treatments at Two Crows. Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle form of bodywork that relies on long holds to address restrictions in the body’s tissues, helping to support nervous system regulation and ease fascial tension. Treatments can be deeply relaxing and helpful in reducing stress, releasing tension, and supporting overall vitality.
A Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy session begins with a standing assessment to identify areas of fascial tension. During the treatment, patients remain fully clothed while Cassidy uses mindful pressure to work with the body’s subtle rhythms, attending and deeply listening to areas of quietude. Sessions are profoundly relaxing and encourage a sense of ease in both body and mind.

Chinese Herbal Formulas
As part of your acupuncture treatment, Dr. Shade may recommend a custom herbal formula for additional support between acupuncture appointments. Dr. Shade also offers stand-alone herbal consultations. Custom herbal formulas may take the form of granules (herbal powders), tinctures, or bulk dried herbs. Herbal formulas can treat a wide variety of issues from the physical (digestive disorders, headaches, pain, etc.) to the emotional (insomnia, anxiety, ADHD, etc.).
Moxibustion
Dr. Shade may offer moxibustion therapy as part of your acupuncture treatment. Moxibustion is the burning of the mugwort herb (artemesia) on or near acupuncture points. Moxibustion improves blood and qi circulation and can be helpful in alleviating pain, supporting digestion, and improving fertility.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a traditional medicine that emerged in China about three thousand years ago and was systematized in the second century B.C. It involves the use of fine needles inserted into the skin in specific places, called acupuncture points, chosen by using various diagnostic techniques like pulse or palpation, and according to the theories of Chinese Medicine.

How does acupuncture work?
Acupuncture operates on the theory that a person's qi and blood follow specific routes in their circulation around the body, and these routes are called channels or meridians. There are twelve of these meridians, each of which are associated with specific functions of the body such as digestion, respiration, immunity, and circulation. Thus, the acupuncture points that exist along the meridians may be needled to increase the functionality and circulation of blood and qi within and between the meridians to improve your health.
How often should I get acupuncture?
The answer will vary depending on the problem that you are getting treated for. For many musculoskeletal issues, the answer may be several times in one week, but for something like PTSD it may be once per week for several months. The right answer also depends on the severity of your condition.
Is acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is safe when provided by a trained professional.
Does acupuncture hurt?

People may feel very little, but often experience a tingling or heavy sensation at the site of the insertion. This is a good thing, and indicates the activity of qi.

What should I wear to my appointment?
Please wear loose, comfortable clothes to your acupuncture or bodywork appointment. For acupuncture appointments, it is helpful if you can roll up your pant legs above your knees and your shirt above your elbows.
